SculpSure® vs. CoolSculpting®

Three females with weight loss marking

Nearly everyone has at least one “problem area” on their body where stubborn fat refuses to budge. Liposuction requires surgery and a brief downtime for recovery, which not everyone has the time or desire to do. That’s why non-invasive fat reduction procedures like SculpSure® and CoolSculpting® have gained prominence—they offer fat reduction without surgery or downtime. In this blog, we discuss the differences and similarities between SculpSure® and CoolSculpting® to help you decide which is the best treatment for you.

How Does SculpSure® Work?

Many patients are looking for a comfortable and convenient way to reduce unwanted fat in certain areas of their bodies. SculpSure® is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses heat generated by laser energy to “melt” unwanted fat cells. The laser applicators are applied to the targeted treatment area, and the SculpSure® system generates heat energy deep under your skin to eliminate fat cells. The innovative system also delivers cooling to the surface of your skin to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Once the fat cells have been destroyed, they are processed and gradually eliminated by your body through a process called apoptosis. The heat generated from the SculpSure® treatment also tightens skin and stimulates collagen production to further rejuvenate the area.

How Does CoolSculpting® Work?

In contrast with the heat energy used by SculpSure®, CoolSculpting® works by delivering what is known as “controlled cooling” to areas of your body with excess fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise. The cooling process, known as cryolipolysis, kills targeted fat cells by freezing them. Fat freezes at a lower temperature than other tissues in your body, which makes it easier to target only the fat cells without damaging the tissue in the surrounding area. Once the excess fat cells have been crystallized, they die, and the dead cells are flushed out of your body naturally.

Comparing SculpSure® and CoolSculpting®

Both SculpSure® and CoolSculpting® are designed to gently and effectively reduce fat cells, permanently eliminating them from your body. Let’s look at how the two non-invasive fat loss treatments compare so you can feel confident in your decision.

Technologies

While both non-surgical techniques ultimately achieve the same aesthetic goal of fat reduction, they each use a different technological approach. SculpSure® uses heat energy to destroy fat cells, while CoolSculpting® freezes the fat cells to kill them.

Treatment Areas

SculpSure® is primarily used to treat stubborn fat in your abdomen, flanks, and thighs, and it is also approved to treat submental (under the chin) fat. CoolSculpting® applicators come in varying shapes and sizes and can treat several areas of your body, from under your chin to your legs.

Length of Treatment

The length of your SculpSure® and CoolSculpting® sessions depends on the size and number of areas you are treating. If only treating one area, SculpSure® takes under 30 minutes, and CoolSculpting® takes about 35 minutes.

Effectiveness

SculpSure® has been shown to reduce up to 25 percent of fat cells in the treatment area, while CoolSculpting® reduces 10–25 percent. SculpSure® has the added benefit of promoting collagen and elastin production with its heat-based treatment technology. Overall, SculpSure® is effective in both fat reduction and skin tightening, which can be a significant factor for patients who are deciding between the two treatments.

Results

You will start to see some results of your SculpSure® treatment around six weeks after your first session, with your final results developing over 12 weeks. Your CoolSculpting® results begin to be visible three weeks after your initial session, and it can take up to six months to see your final results.

Side Effects

When it comes to side effects, both SculpSure® and CoolSculpting® have your comfort in mind. While you experience minor swelling, redness, or tenderness in the treatment area, these effects are mild and resolve quickly, ensuring your comfort and peace of mind.

The Verdict: Is SculpSure® or CoolSculpting® Better?

While both non-invasive treatments are similar in many ways, offering head-to-toe fat reduction, no downtime, and proven results, the added benefit of skin tightening and collagen induction makes SculpSure® the winner for many patients. SculpSure® offers more precision results for people looking for body contouring in addition to fat reduction.
